Many business owners wear their busyness like a badge of honour. They expect the same from their team. But being the boss does not give you the right to steal time; not from your people and not from yourself.

When you interrupt your team every hour, expect instant replies at night, or plan meetings that eat up whole mornings, you do more harm than good. You break focus. You teach people to survive on urgency instead of structure.

A business that runs on constant availability runs on burnout.

This week’s action step: Respect and defend the time of your team and yourself.

How to do it in one hour

  1. Audit interruptions.
Track one workday and note every time someone’s focus gets broken. Who caused it, and why?

  2. Define focus hours.
Choose one or two daily blocks where nobody gets disturbed unless it’s truly urgent. Treat these hours as sacred.

  3. Clean the calendar.
Cancel, shorten, or batch meetings. Replace “catch-ups” with clear written updates.

  4. Set communication rules.
Email replies within 24 hours. Chat tools only for quick questions. Calls reserved for real decisions.

  5. Create a structured week.
Respect working hours. No late-night messages, no weekend pings, no last-minute tasks before holidays. Your team deserves rest, and so do you.

  6. Lead by example.
Boundaries only work if you follow them first. Respect your own focus time and protect your team’s.

Bonus reminder
Every minute of focus lost to an unnecessary interruption is money lost and energy wasted. Respecting time is not about being strict, it is about being professional.
